The importance of soldiers communicating with friends and family back home is clearly understood by units. In this regard, soldier's have access to resources such as letters, internet cafe's and phone centers for routine communications.
The only time when a soldiers ability to communicate with family back home may be hampered is when priorities at his/her current location may dictate otherwise, in that in doing so, it may degrade the safety & security of our soldiers or the missions at hand.
To inform your soldier of a family emergency that may require him/her to return home, you MUST contact your nearest American Red Cross. They, in turn, will confirm the factual circumstances related to the emergency with the local medical/governmental or professional institutions and in turn relay this to the soldiers command wherever deployed.
Once the commander receives this confirmation from the Red Cross, he/she can make a decision as to whether the soldier will be allowed to return home. There are no exceptions to this long standing policy that has been in place for many years. The American Red Cross and the institutions mentioned above along with the department of defense are have had a long practice in the handling of these type of situations.
