Major General R. Martin Umbarger was appointed as The Adjutant General of Indiana on 11 March 2004 and reappointed by Governor Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. on 1 December 2004.  As The Adjutant General, Major General Umbarger's primary focus is to lead the Indiana Army and Air National Guard.

     Major General Umbarger began his career as an enlisted soldier for the Indiana Army National Guard in 1969.  He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry Branch, in June 1971 after graduating from the Indiana Military Academy.  Prior to his current assignment, Major General Umbarger served as the Deputy Commanding General (Reserve Component) United States Forces Command.  Other notable assignments include the Assistant Division Commander for Training, 38th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and Commanding General of the 76th Infantry Brigade (Separate), one of fifteen Enhanced Brigades in the Army National Guard.  Under Major General Umbarger’s leadership the 76th Infantry Brigade (Separate) executed a very successful Deployment and Rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana in May of 2000.

JOINT FORCES AIR COMPONENT DEPUTY COMMANDER

Brigadier General Richard H. Clevenger is the chief of staff also serving as the commander for the Indiana Air National Guard. With headquarters in Indianapolis, he has the overall responsibility for the organization, training and equipage of two fully combat ready F-16 Fighter Wings, the 122d in Fort Wayne and the 181st in Terre Haute; two air-to-ground gunnery ranges at Atterbury and Jefferson Proving Grounds; a weather flight; and has direct supervision of the headquarters staff. He serves as the principal advisor to the Adjutant General on all programs and operations affecting the Indiana Air National Guard units to ensure wartime mission readiness.

General Clevenger received his commission through Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1971 and earned his pilot wings at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia in 1972.  Prior to his current assignment, his distinguished service with the 122d Fighter Wing included assignment as standardization evaluation officer, assistant director of operations, operations group commander and wing commander. His aviation career includes more than 5,500 flying hours flying and instructing in the F-16C, F-4C, F-4E, C-26, C-131, and F-100.

Colonel Brian R. Copes

Colonel Brian R. Copes assumed duties as Chief of Staff for the Joint Forces Headquarters – Indiana National Guard on 01 February 2007.
Colonel Copes was born in Connersville, Indiana in 1959, graduated from Brookville High School in 1978, and is a lifelong Indiana resident. 
He enlisted in the Indiana National Guard in 1977 as an OH-58 Helicopter Repairer achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). In 1983, he completed the United States Army Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Branch followed by completion of the Infantry Officer Basic Course (Commandant’s List).  He graduated from the Officer Rotary Wing Aviator Course (Aero Scout Track) and Aviation Officer Advanced Course (Master Tactician).  He has completed the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff Officers Course, and is a graduate of the United States Army War College Class of 2005.
Colonel Copes received a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the US Army War College and earned a Master of Science degree in Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Management (magna cum laude) from Indiana Wesleyan University.  He also possesses an Associate Degree in General Studies (with Honors) from Indiana University.
As an enlisted soldier, he completed the Basic (Commandant’s List) and Advanced (Honor Graduate) Noncommissioned Officer Courses at the Indiana Military Academy.  Other military training includes the UH-1 Instructor Pilot Course, Aircrew Basic Land Survival Course, Observer/Controller Certification, Bosnia and Kosovo Leader Development Courses, Strategic Planning for Executives, and Defense Equal Opportunity Management training.
Assignments include OH-58 Helicopter Repairer, Aircraft Quality Control Technical Inspector, Liaison Section Leader, Aviation Unit Maintenance Platoon Leader, UH-1 Assault Platoon Leader, Air Cavalry Troop Commander, Flight Operations Officer, and UH-1 Assault Company Commander.  Staff assignments include Assistant S-3 (Air), Assistant S-3, Brigade S-2, Brigade S-3, and Acting XO for the Aviation Brigade, 38th Infantry Division.  He served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (G-3) for the 38th Infantry Division; the Director of Plans, Operations, Training, and Military Support (J-3) for the Joint Forces Headquarters – Indiana; and most recently as Chief of Staff for the 38th Infantry Division.
Colonel Copes is a Senior Army Aviator whose military awards include the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Service Medal (w/Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (w/OLC), Army Achievement Medal (w/OLC), Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (w/20-year device), Noncommissioned Officer Development Ribbon (w/Numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon, Indiana Distinguished Service Medal, Indiana Commendation Medal, Indiana Long Service Medal, Indiana Emergency Service Ribbon, Indiana Recruiting Ribbon, Indiana Retention Ribbon, Indiana Military Volunteer Emblem, Outside Continental United States (OCONUS) Training Ribbon, Georgia Olympic Service Ribbon, Mississippi Magnolia Medal, Mississippi Emergency Service Ribbon, and the Aircraft Crewman Badge.  He was awarded the Order of Saint Maurice by the National Infantry Association in 2003.  As a noncommissioned officer, he received the Indianapolis Star-News Military Achievement Award in 1982.  He was recognized with the Indiana Wesleyan University Outstanding Alumni Award in 2003 and peer-selected for two Indiana Wesleyan University Outstanding Professional Awards during his Bachelors (1993) and Masters (1997) degree programs.
Brian has worked full-time for the Indiana National Guard as an Active Guard/Reserve (AGR) soldier from 1981-1983 (enlisted) and 1986 to present.  He has been married for 29 years to the former Donna Jean Meyer of Brookville, Indiana.  They have two adult children and five grand-children.  Colonel Copes and his wife reside in Shelbyville, Indiana.

STATE COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR 

STATE COMMAND CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT -AIR COMPONENT

Command Sergeant Major Brown began his military career in1969 by joining the United States Army. He graduated from the Noncommissioned Officer Academy that same year, later serving as Training NCOIC, 7th ID, Fort Ord, California. He subsequently served as a Squad Leader and acting Platoon Sergeant, D Company, 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) in the Republic of Viet Nam. CSM Brown joined the Indiana National Guard in 1983 serving as a Personnel Action Specialist, transferring in 1984 to Company C 1-293rd Infantry serving as a Squad Leader.
His military education includes: Light Weapons Infantry 11B, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Personnel Actions Specialist Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course, ARNG-NCO Battle Skills Course, Basic Airborne, Long Range Surveillance Leader Course, Jump Master Course, Pathfinder Course, and the U. S. Army Command Sergeants Major Academy.

Chief Master Sergeant Blake is the eight State Command Chief Master Sergeant to the Joint Forces Air Component Commander, Indiana Air National Guard,
Indianapolis, Indiana.
She is responsible for all affairs concerned with the enlisted personnel of the Indiana Air National Guard.
Chief Blake enlisted in the Air National Guard in 1976 and spent a total of twenty-seven years in various career fields.  She was selected as the State Command Chief Master Sergeant in August 2003.  Chief Blake also served as President of the 122FW Chief’s Council and Secretary of the NCO Academy Graduate’s association, and is currently an active member of the 122FW Honor Guard.
