Former Adjutant General of Indiana Passes On

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Governor Mitch Daniels and the Adjutant General of Indiana, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, have received notification that a MG (Ret) John N. Owens, Adjutant General of Indiana from January 13 1969 to July 29 1972, passed away on July 22, 2006 in Seymour, Indiana.

MG (Ret) Owens was born in 1920 in Louisville, Kentucky.  He entered the Army in 1942 during World War II as an enlisted soldier.  He later completed Officer Candidate School to earn a commission, and participated in two major campaigns in the European Theater.  He was appointed in the Army National Guard in 1949 as the Commander of Company B, 138th Heavy Tank Battalion at Seymour, Indiana.  He subsequently commanded two different tank battalions, two different brigades of the 38th Infantry Division and was Commandant of the Indiana Military Academy.  In 1969 he was appointed as the Adjutant General of Indiana and served over three years in that capacity.  From August 1972 until his retirement in April 30, 1980 he served as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for Indiana.
