Indiana Army National Guard Soldier Killed In Iraq
Indianapolis, Ind. - The Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, for the State of Indiana received notification that a soldier from the Indiana National Guard was killed while on deployment in Iraq.
Sgt. Joseph E. Proctor, of the 638th Support Battalion (Aviation), Noblesville, Indiana, was killed Wednesday, May 3rd, while conducting combat operations on deployment in Iraq.  Sgt. Proctor is a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana.
“These are the phone calls one hopes will never come. We pray tonight for the soul of Sgt. Proctor, and we pray for his family. Neither our grief nor our gratitude for his life can be put into words,” said Governor Mitch Daniels.

"I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the Indiana guardsman who lost his life in the service of his nation.  No words can adequately express the sorrow and loss that I and their fellow guardsmen feel in their untimely death.  I can say to you, however, that their sacrifice in defense of freedom on the soil of a distant land will never be forgotten, said Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, the Adjutant General."
