Operation Cyclone Adventure
Story & Photos by Pfc. Jessica Beardsley
The 38th Infantry Division (Mechanized) held the first annual Operation Cyclone Adventure at Camp Atterbury on Saturday and Sunday. The recruiting event held on April 22-23 brought over 200 high school students from seven cities to the military post for a day of training events and simulations. The students were taken through a Leadership Response Course, virtual reality combat training, a paintball range and had the opportunity to rappel, and talk to soldiers about their experiences. “The soldiers we have in the Guard at these events that interact with the students are much more of an example of what the Guard is. With the stories of their jobs and experiences, they are living examples of what the Guard has to
offer, and that’s more than what any recruiter can sell them,” said Staff Sgt. Kelly S. Coates, a recruiter for the 38th ID. “Our soldiers are examples of what today’s youth strive to be.”
The culminating event of the weekend was a demonstration of a raid by tactical forces. This included the 151st Long Range Surveillance Detachment parachuting, suppressive fire by howitzers and Military Police, a tactical team being dropped of by a black hawk and a medical evacuation.
“The point is to show them what they can do and what kinds of jobs they can have if they join the Guard,” said Lt. Col. Bernard Kruse, the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3 for the 38th Infantry Division.
“It’s (the Guard) much more fun, more relaxed than what people try to scare you into thinking it is,” said Cherry Hilliard, a junior at Pike High School in Indianapolis that attended the event.
The Indiana National Guard is looking for enthusiastic, able bodied people to join its ranks and aid their country in the Global War on Terror, Homeland Security and other state and national emergencies. For more information of joining the National Guard call 1-800-Go-Guard or a local recruiter.
