HOOSIER YOUTH CHALLENGE ACADEMY OFFERS SECOND CHANCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUTS

New program helps at-risk youth with life skills, education levels and employment potential at no cost

INDIANAPOLIS Hoosier Youth ChalleNGe Academy, a division of the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program, is seeking male and female high school dropouts, ages 16 to 18, for their first class beginning July 8, 2007.

The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program, a voluntary, preventive program designed to give at-risk youth a second chance, began in 1993. This is the first year Indiana has received Department of Defense and state funding to offer the program.

“We are excited to bring such a program to the youth of Indiana,” stated retired Col. Wayne Hill, Director of Hoosier Youth ChalleNGe Academy. “We want to provide a program that will help young people achieve their goals, and will mold them into well-balanced citizens.”

The 17 ˝ month volunteer program has three phases, the first two of which are residential, in a “quasi-military” environment at the Academy.

Phase 1

Two week program that assesses the candidate’s potential for successfully completing the program. Consists heavily of physical training, leadership and teamwork skills.

Phase 2

Five month program for the cadets. Consists of training on eight core components: Academic Excellence (with objective of obtaining a GED), Life Coping Skills, Job Skills, Service to Community, Physical Fitness, Health and Hygiene Leadership, and Responsible Citizenship.

Phase 3

One year post-residential program. Graduates return to their communities, and meet regularly with an adult mentor. Implement the life plan they developed throughout the residential program.

The first Academy class will begin on Sunday, July 8, 2007 with 150 cadets. The academy is located across from Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, Ind. The deadline for applications is June 1, 2007. For more information or to apply, visit www.ngycp.org/in or call Ms. Barry Stewart at 317-331-1412.
